ANALYSIS OF PRO-POOR GROWTH IN LATIN AMERICA DURING THE PERIOD 2004-2014

The objective of this study is to analyze the influence of recent economic growth on the patterns of poverty and inequality in Latin America and to assess whether the recent good macroeconomic performance in the region is compatible with the notion of pro-poor growth. Two prominent lines of thinking about economic growth are followed that are compatible with reducing poverty and reducing monetary disparities: the first is proposed by Ravallion and Chen (2003) and promotes a focus on reduction and not so much so. in the distribution of monetary deprivations; the second is traditionally attributed to Kakwani and Pernia (2000) and emphasizes the need for deeper analysis of the distribution of material deprivation.

The analysis focuses on Latin America and includes the following countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay in the 2006-2014 period, according to data availability. To achieve international comparability, the data comes from the World Bank's PovCalNet database.

The study seeks to answer the following question: Did pro-poor growth take place in Latin America? For this, growth incidence curves and pro-poor growth rates are estimated. The PovCalNet data allows the necessary calculations to be made for the period 2006-2014.
