ANALYSIS OF THE MACROECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT

Inflation, real income and household consumption in Bolivia: an impact study of blockades

Based on a detailed work of gathering information on the road blockages that have affected the flow of market supplies, between 2002 and 2005, this study econometrically quantifies their impact on the general price level, in addition to technically show that inflationary effects are transitory and not permanent. In a second part of the study, the impact of blockages on real household income and its consumption pattern is quantified. One of the main results is that the blocks are highly regressive, in the sense that they affect the poorest the most; the study quantifies the regressivity of the blocks by income stratum.
