Rural development through venture capital in Bolivia

It is known that microcredit has had a very important expansion in Bolivia, becoming the main engine of the expansion of the financial system. However, there is evidence of a demand for investment resources for the agricultural sector that remains unsatisfied and that has not been adequately met by microfinance entities. In response to this problem in the period 2010 - 2012, the Private Bolivian University (UPB), CIDRE-Financial Development Institution and the Valles Foundation, worked to consolidate an innovative model of rural business society promoted by the Program for the Rural Innovations Escalation (PEIR) of the International Development Research Center (IDRC) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which seek to understand how innovation processes that have had local effects can be disseminated and adopted widely. The model promotes the association between rural cooperatives and associations, micro and small agricultural and agroindustrial companies that are not publicly traded, and private investors, who form sustainable and adequately financed business companies; allowing small producers to access competitive markets and receive timely technical assistance. The proposed methodology is made up of three stages. The first is the identification of socially responsible investment opportunities; The second is the design and implementation of specific investment plans for the identified investment opportunities, and the third is the comprehensive monitoring and evaluation of the impacts of the investment made.
