Natural colorants- Study of species in the Bolivian highlands with potential application as colorants for their chemical-biological and economic evaluation. Phase III

The use of natural colorants has rebounded again in the industry due to toxicity reports, reported by the WHO and FAO, in synthetic derivatives. A major campaign has emerged worldwide supporting nature as a source of pigments and colorants. Several natural colorants have been studied and validated not only for their dyeing attributes but also for possible antioxidant, photoprotective or nutraceutical applications. This project has two parts, the first one will work with the most interesting species, obtained from Phases I and II of the "Natural Colorants" program, to study their spectroscopic behavior as a function of pH and staining tests will be carried out on different substrates. to cotton. Finally, in the second part, another way to obtain the pigment will be designed without using water as the main extraction solvent due to the limitations that we have to be able to eliminate this solvent from the fraction of interest. Once the new extractive process has been designed, the phytochemical studies will begin with the most interesting species to obtain a fraction rich in pigments. The biological activity (antioxidant and photoprotective) of the colored fraction will be monitored. Likewise, the toxicity of the fraction will be verified for possible applications in cosmetics or food.
