Institute of Computational Intelligence

Description

The Computational Intelligence Institute (IIC) at UPB is the reference center for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Bolivia, dedicated to applied research, innovation, and technology transfer.

Our work focuses on the combination of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI), such as Large Language Models (Large Language Models - LLMs) with Enterprise Knowledge Graphs (Knowledge Graphs – KG). This combination allows us to develop solutions for business process automation, advanced data analytics, and conversational assistants in Spanish that work.

The ICI covers the entire innovation and AI development cycle: from theoretical foundations and algorithmic design to functional prototypes and industrial applications ready to be deployed in companies and institutions in Bolivia and Latin America.

Research areas
  • Generative Artificial Intelligence and Foundation Models: research and adaptation of generative models for task automation, content creation, and business and educational applications in Spanish, with an ethical and responsible approach.

  • Enterprise Knowledge Graphs: development of methods and tools to transform heterogeneous business data into actionable knowledge through knowledge graphs and graph-based analytics.

  • Conversational Assistants: research in natural language processing for the development of advanced conversational agents, oriented toward understanding intentions, emotions, and automatic generation of responses in Spanish.

  • AI Agents: we investigate the use of LLMs for the development of AI Agents for business process automation.

Services and technology transfer
  • Business training workshops for the adoption of Generative AI (Like ChatGPT) and AI agents for process automation.

  • Development of conversational agents with Artificial Intelligence for business process automation.

  • Integration of business data for intelligent analytics.

  • Projects for the adoption of Artificial Intelligence in different industries.

Institutional focus

The ICI's mission is to position Bolivia in the field of research and development in Artificial Intelligence, promoting the training of specialized talent and the application of cutting-edge technologies to solve socioeconomic and environmental challenges in Bolivia and Latin America.

Institutional profile
  • Creation date: September 2018

  • Rectoral Resolution: UPB-RR-05/2018

Faculty Award

Project:

The proposal presented by the Institute of Computational Intelligence (IIC), led by Dr. Diego Collarana, was the winner of the Faculty Award granted by Google AI and TensorFlow. With this award, the IIC team will teach AI in Spanish to young people in Bolivia. Game-like activities will be developed to reinforce the learning of the main concepts and techniques in Artificial Intelligence. In addition, 140 young Bolivians will be trained to carry out Artificial Intelligence projects. Winning this award and the support of the Google AI team in this project marks a milestone in the dissemination of knowledge in Artificial Intelligence in Bolivia.
