Peter Carvajal Gutiérrez and Cristhian Saavedra Florero, members of the Radio Communications Laboratory (LRC) of UPB, were selected as recipients of Student Travel Grants to participate in the 2nd IEEE Latin American Conference on Antennas and Propagation (LACAP 2026), held from February 22 to 25 in Natal, Brazil. These grants, funded by the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S), recognize students with scientific papers accepted at the conference, highlighting their track record and research quality.
The presented papers are the result of research led by Gustavo Siles Soria, Ph.D., Director of the LRC. Peter Carvajal presented the paper "Instantaneous rain attenuation from rain rate data for short length terrestrial links at 38 GHz", coauthored with Dr. Siles. For his part, Cristhian Saavedra presented "LoRa at 915 MHz over a high-altitude lake: Preliminary measurements and discussion", research carried out in collaboration with Hugo Cárdenas, Dr. Siles, and Miguel Gutiérrez Gaitán, from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
Both papers address highly relevant topics in telecommunications: signal attenuation due to rain in terrestrial links and the propagation of LoRa signals over bodies of water at high altitude, a condition characteristic of the Bolivian geography and of particular scientific interest for the Andean region.
The participation of these students in an international-scale event positions the research developed at UPB within the Latin American scientific map, demonstrating the quality and scope of the projects of the Radio Communications Laboratory. The institution highlighted the effort, dedication, and academic commitment of both researchers as a source of pride for the university community.
