Deans message

Dear Students,

First of all, most welcome to the website of the International Office of the Universidad Privada Boliviana (UPB). My name is Gustavo Molina and I am the Dean of Internationalization, Admissions and Student Services.

The foremost purpose of the International office is to boost internationalization efforts of the university.

UPB is the leading university in Bolivia and we offer many opportunities for overseas and local students. We offer internships to our students both overseas and local and the increasing number of courses are offered in English language.

Bolivia is a beautiful country and overseas students take opportunities to travel around the country to partake its beauty.

Finally, if you are an international student who wants to join UPB as an exchange student or if you are already an UPB student and plan to take advantage of the UPB´s exchange study opportunities abroad, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Also, overseas universities are welcome to contact us to enter into exchange or other types of agreements.

Thank you

Gustavo Molina

Information for inbound/incoming students

Introduction

Welcome to the English website of Universidad Privada Boliviana (often referred to as UPB). UPB is a leading university in Bolivia with major campuses in beautiful cities of Cochabamba and La Paz.

You have opportunity to join UPB either as an exchange student or as guest student or so called “free-movers”, meaning you can study one or more semesters without being part of a specific exchange program.

At the moment, we have three types of exchange programs:

  1. One to one exchange program
  2. ISEP exchange program
  3. ELAP program for Canadian students

Check with your university if they have any signed exchange agreement with us or is part of the ISEP program. If yes, you are most welcome to join our university. If the agreement does not exist you still can join UPB as a free-mover student.

Before Your Arrival

How do I apply?

You need to fill application form for admission. There are two types of forms that are available. One is for the exchange students and other is for freemover students.

You need to send following documents with your application:

Admission Letter

Once your complete application is received (post/email?) we will send you the admission letter (from our side) within two weeks. Should you need the letter via email (scanned) or fax, please let us know.

Application

Application deadlines are:

30th of April for the period of study starting August 1 (subject to change)

31st of October for the period of study starting February 1 (subject to change)

Once we have received your application (post/email?), we will send you the admission letter within a week by email.

Tuition fees

Overseas exchange students joining UPB do not pay tuition fees (normally). Freemovers  are expected to pay normal UPB tuition fees. For exact information about fees please contact international office.

Courses and language skills

At our university, most of the courses are taught in Spanish. There are number of courses are or could be taught in English. This is particularly true with business faculty. Please inquire with international office about the courses that can be offered in English.

In any case, you must be good level of language skills to study at UPB.

Spanish language course

One month prior to each semester an advance university level Spanish language course is offered. You must have adequate knowledge of Spanish to join this course.

Once admitted

Once you are admitted to Universidad Privada Boliviana (UPB)  either as an exchange student or as a freemover, please look into the following section.

In this section you will find information that will help you prepare for your stay in Bolivia.

Student Visa

All international students need student visa. Contact Bolivian Embassy or Consulate in your home country or country of residence.

Should you need any help from us please do not hesitate to contact us.

For reference purpose, please see the following link. Please note that the requirements may differ from country to country

http://www.boliviawdc.org/consulate/visas/sv

Accommodation

The university does not provide university student accommodation. All outside students rent private accommodation. We would suggest you to stay in any reasonably price hotel (we can provide information about this) for the first few days.  Once you are here, you can find accommodation. Your buddy can help you to do this. The quality of accommodation varies. Many times you can find well-furnished accommodation at a reasonably good price. It is cheaper to find accommodation in Cochabamba than La Paz.  In Cochabamba you can find a decent furnished, self-contained apartment for about $200-250.

Insurances

Please take health and injury insurance in your home country, prior to your arrival

The budget

The approximate living cost per month in Cochabamba could be (per month):

Housing (decent , self-contained and well-furnished)

 $200 - $250

Food (eating food out at least twice a day)

 $200 - $250

Travel ( by university bus or transport called Trufi

 $20 - $30

Utilities

 $30 - $60

Entertainment and sports

 $50 - $100

Books, printing and photocopying

 $50 - $100

Clothes and toiletries

 $30- $50

Laundary

 $30- $50

Arrival

Cochabamba airport is primarily a domestic airport, unlike La Paz or Santa Cruz. If you choose to come to Cochabamba, you need to come via either La Paz or Santa Cruz.

Please notify your arrival time and airline details. We will ensure that someone will come to collect you at the airport. Please do not forget to take relevant telephone numbers of UPB, in case the delays in flights occur.

Local Transport

We prefer you to travel back and forth to the university by university bus. It is the safest mode available. The other mode such as Micro bus called as “trufi” in Bolivia are quite safe as well. If you want to travel by taxi, please choose “radio taxi”.

 Before your departure:

Transcript of Records

Once all your grades are published, we will issue your Transcript of Records automatically and send it to your home university via regular mail. You will receive a pdf copy via email. The Transcript contains a list of your courses and the respective grades and amount of ECTS obtained. Within the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), courses are assigned a certain number of credits which reflect the work load required for the course. The credits are awarded when a course is successfully completed. Please mind that for those exams you did not pass or did not attend you will not get credit points – they will, however, appear on the transcript.

Contact and further questions:

Should you have any questions regarding education at UPB, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will be very happy to serve you.

                                Information for Outbound Student

       Experience the world!

Exchange student opportunity

Immerse yourself in another country!! As a UPB student, you have the opportunity to study, travel and make lifelong friends around the world. Learn more about yourself, become more independent and give your UPB degree an international edge.  Share your Bolivian culture abroad and, in return, experience the culture, lifestyle, and people of another country!

Take advantage of these opportunities to earn credit toward your degree while gaining a cultural and personal perspective in your life. Participating on an exchange is a fun and life-changing way to broaden your horizons academically, geographically and culturally.

Please visit the 'Outbound Exchange Information' section located on the left for more information about requirements, partner institutions, course transfer information, etc.

Why Student Exchange?

-      Self-Confidence and Independence: Studying abroad means taking your own responsibility. By doing so you build self-confidence and independence. These are the characteristics required for future success in your career.

-      Build Global Mindset: Global mindset is also one of the characteristics required to be successful as global managers. Study abroad gives you perfect opportunity to build global mindset.

  • Improve Your Language Skills: Studying abroad often gives you the opportunity to completely immerse yourself in English or other new language, and there is no better way to improve or learn your language skills. This also gives you opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and go beyond a purely class-room experience.

  • Career Opportunities: When you finish your study as an exchange student and return to Bolivia, you will return with a new perspective on different culture, language skills, and foreign education.  These components are very attractive to future employers.

  • Adaptation and Problem-Solving: Discover yourself: A benefit to studying abroad is the opportunity to discover yourself while gaining an understanding of a different culture. Being in a new place by yourself can be overwhelming at times, and it tests your ability to adapt to diverse situations while being able to problem solve.

  • Graduate School Admissions: Similar to future employers, graduate school admissions directors look very closely on study abroad experiences. Students that study abroad show diversity and show that they aren’t afraid to seek out new challenges or put themselves in difficult situations. Most importantly, students who have studied abroad show just how committed they are to their education. Graduate schools regularly look for candidates who will bring a unique aspect to their university. Students who have studied abroad have shown that they have both the curiosity and educational acumen to be successful in graduate school.

  • Different Styles of Education:  Study abroad means chance to experience different styles of education.  Also, you might able to study courses that are not available at UPB.

  • Make Lifelong Friends One of the biggest benefits of studying abroad is the opportunity to meet new lifelong friends from different backgrounds. You can create lasting relationships with your fellow students.

Application:  You can find application to study abroad at our international office.

Deadlines: Deadlines for the applications are:

February 15   for August - December study in the same year

August 15      for January - June study in the following year

Eligibility/Prerequisites for application

Information sessions

International office of UPB will host information sessions Once every other month to help students learn more about the exchange program.  If you are considering going on an exchange, these information sessions will keep you well informed. At the sessions, we will tell you about the Student Exchange Program: How to apply, what's required, where you can go, how it works, etc.

After attending an info session, you are welcome to contact the international office at anytime to discuss exchange options and possible plans. Info sessions are free, fun & will help you to understand what to expect, as well as learn how to apply to the program: Be sure not to leave with unanswered questions! All UPB students are welcome to attend.

Keep an eye on our website and UPB´s facebook  for the announcement of next information session.

Course transfer information

Course Approval Form

All students participating in an exchange must complete the Course Approval Form provided by International Office. Students must meet with their respective program Heads at UPB to have the courses they wish to take assessed and approved. The form must be completed and returned to International Office prior to the student's departure. If the courses are not approved by Head of your Program, you may not receive UPB credit for the work done abroad. In addition, you must pass all of your classes here at UPB in order to receive credit.

Will my grades be affected?

Your grades should not be compromised by your studies abroad because your courses will be transferred back to UPB on a pass/fail basis, thus avoiding potential problems that could arise from different grading systems.

Financing your student exchange

ELAP is completely financed by Candian government. Once your application is approved by the Canadian authorities you are eligible to receive  complete funding. For more information please see the following link:

http://www.scholarships-bourses.gc.ca/scholarships-bourses/can/institutions/elap-pfla.aspx?lang=eng

In ISEP program you do not pay any tuition fees to the university you are visiting. Also, you are offered accommodation and about 20 meals per week free. Sometimes, though not always your local transportation is paid. On the other hand, you need to pay the cost of hosting foreign ISEP student to Bolivia to UPB. The cost varies, please ask about this to the Dean Mgr. Gustavo Molina about the exact cost.

For one- to-one, reciprocal exchange program with universities such as New Mexico or Oklahoma you need not require any tuition fees, but must bear all other cost.

For up-to-date details about the cost, please contact International office.

Cost of spending semester abroad

The living cost of spending semester abroad varies from program to program and from country to country. Please consult with International Office for questions regarding cost of living

Health and Medicine

You must ensure that you are medically ensured prior to your departure on exchange program. Ask more about this at international office.

DESCRIPCION DEL PROGRAMA  ISEP

ISEP is a network of over 300 colleges and universities in 50 countries cooperating to provide affordable access to international education for a diverse student population. ISEP students gain intercultural competence through integration into their host institution and host culture while exploring the international dimensions of their academic field.

ISEP Exchange and Direct members are institutions of higher education that are regionally accredited or recognized by their government or ministry of education.

ISEP is a non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors, supported by member fees and fees for service, and administered by a central office in Arlington, Virginia, and by the designated coordinator at each member institution.

Established in 1979 under authority of the Fulbright-Hays Act as the International Student Exchange Program at Georgetown University, ISEP was supported by a grant from the (former) United States Information Agency until 1996.  In 1997, ISEP was incorporated as an independent organization.

What We Offer

ISEP-Exchange each outbound participant pays the cost of an academic term (tuition, housing and meals) at the home institution, for every student sent abroad, the institution receives one in return. ISEP facilitates the exchanges between our members world wide and manages the exchange balances.

ISEP-Direct fee-paid study-abroad programs at member institutions, open to all ISEP-Direct and ISEP-Exchange members; participants pay a fee to ISEP, which covers the host institution’s program cost.

ISEP participants

  • Are as fully integrated into their host institution as their length of stay and language skills permit
  • Gain understanding of the international dimensions of their academic field
  • Develop intercultural competence and personal maturity through immersion in another culture

ISEP members

  • Are institutions accredited by their governmental or regional academic agency or ministry
  • Cooperate as equal partners in a spirit of trust and mutual support to further the internationalization of their campuses and offer access to high-quality programs in diverse locations
  • Agree to terms of participation that facilitate students’ integration into the host institution and host culture as well as transfer of academic credit to the home institution

The ISEP Central Office

  • Facilitates exchange of academic information and offers expert advice about programs
  • Administers the placement process and provides support during the student's period of study
  • Administers the J-1 exchange visitor program for students entering the United States on ISEP programs
  • Offers professional development and networking opportunities through conferences, workshops and study tours open to members

Benefits of ISEP

  • Access to a wide range of institutions of higher education in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, North America, and Oceania without the necessity of negotiating and maintaining individual agreements
  • Host institution staff conduct orientation, ensure that housing and meals are provided, and facilitate students’ registration and integration into the institution
  • Placements are available in all academic disciplines; institutions can send students to study in one field and receive participants in another field
  • Incoming students bring cultural and linguistic diversity to the campus and international perspectives to the curriculum
  • Because exchange participants pay their home institutions, tuition fees stay at home, and enrollment figures remain constant
  • ISEP-Direct programs provide the same comprehensive academic and support services as study abroad provider programs but with substantially lower fees
